After much lobbying by the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other industry leaders, CMS has updated the Medicare payment rates for COVID-19 vaccine administration effective March 15, 2021. Medicare will pay approximately $40 (adjusted based on geography) per dose administered after this effective date. This payment is nearly double the payment for doses administered prior to March 15, 2021, which was $16.94 for the initial dose and $28.39 for the final dose in the series. CMS made this change in response to new information they received quantifying the cost to administer the vaccines safely and appropriately during the public health emergency.
