On September 9th, 2020, the NFID presented a webinar discussing the shared clinical decision-making for HPV immunization in adults. The webinar recording is available to watch on the NFID website. Presenters were Lauri E. Markowitz, MD, HPV Team Lead and Associate Director of Science for HPV at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Margot L. Savoy, MD, MPH, Chair and Associate Professor, Family and Community Medicine at the Temple University School of Medicine.
The webinar begins with Dr. Markowitz providing an overview of current recommendations for persons age 26 and younger. She then discusses the Evidence to Recommendations Framework that the ACIP uses to develop new recommendations. In addition, Dr. Markowitz briefly discusses the burden of disease due to HPV infection in adults. Expanding HPV vaccination to adults through age 45 produces relatively small additional health benefits.
Dr. Markowitz continues by defining shared clinical decision making and notes that determining who will benefit from vaccines in such category is not straightforward.
The second half of the presentation has Dr. Savoy presenting clinical cases to instruct handling shared decision making in a real-world scenario.
The webinar closes with a question and answer session.
